Ziyad Raoof at the official opening of World Urban Forum in Katowice

KRG Representative in Poland took part in the opening session of 11th edition of the UN World Urban Forum. The event lasted from 26 to 30 June was attended by more than 20,000 delegates from all over the world: presidents, heads of international organizations, ministers, presidents of cities, scientists and urban activists.
At the opening session of the Forum spoke among others: prime minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki and Executive Director of UN Habitat Maimunah Mohd Sharif. On-line speeches were also given by the UN Secretary General and a few presidents.
The main theme of this year’s edition was: “Transforming our cities for a better urban future”.
During ministerial sessions, discussion panels, debates and other events, the international community discussed the improvement of living conditions in cities and the implementation of the UN’s sustainable development agenda in cities. This year’s forum also included references to the current international situation. For example there was be a discussion of rebuilding cities from war damage. This is an important issue also in the context of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
