President Barzani Receives a High level French Delegation

Salahadin, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, ( President Masoud Barzani received a high level French government delegation which included the ministers of the Armed Forces and Foreign Affairs and International Development, Ms. Florence Parly and Mr. Jean-Yves Le Drian respectively. The meeting entailed several crucial subjects including the ongoing operations against the terrorists of the Islamic State and the issue of the Kurdistan Independence Referendum.

Mr. Le Drian and Ms. Parly commended President Barzani and the Peshmerga forces for their great role in the liberation of Mosul. The French ministers also expressed their appreciation to the Kurdistan Region’s provision of a safe haven to hundreds of thousands of IDPs during these difficult times for the Kurdistan Region and the rest of Iraq. The French ministers emphasized on the continuation of support from France to the Kurdistan Region and especially to the Peshmerga forces as they have demonstrated to the world that they are very capable fighters whose role against the terrorists of the Islamic State was one of the major reasons we have achieved this many victories against the terrorists.

On his part President Barzani expressed his gratitude to the people and government of France and made reference to the support from France to the Kurdistan Region immediately after the brutal attack on Sinjar from the terrorists of the Islamic State in August of 2014.

On the topic of the independence referendum, President Barzani repeated the position of the Kurdistan Region and stated that the Kurdistan experiences with Baghdad have repeatedly failed and that the people of Kurdistan are entitled to the right to voice their stance on independence. It is therefore, the President added, that we will hold the Kurdistan Independence Referendum as scheduled, on September 25.
