Memory of the great friend of Kurdish nation

On September 30, 2019, after a long illness Kornel Morawiecki died- father of current Polish Prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki. He was important figure in Polish politics. Prominent leader of democratic opposition during communist times, recently he has been member of Polish parliament, with honorary title of “senior marshal” of Polish parliament.

But most of all, he was great friend of Kurdish nation. He truly understood and supported Kurdish aspirations. On September 12, 2017 together with Ziyad Raoof KRG Representative in Poland he organized press conference in Polish parliament. At that conference he officially declared support for independence referendum and for independence of Kurdistan Region.

He also participated in independence referendum in Kurdistan, as a head of delegation of Polish observers. After coming back to Poland he repeatedly in Polish media supported independence of Kurdistan and praised its stability and tolerance telling among others in the interview, that “Kurdistan could be the field of reconciliation between Christians and Muslims”. He also publicly expressed regret that “Poland and Europe remain quiet and do not support Kurds”

After the referendum Kornel Morawiecki was still following the fate of Kurds and Kurdistan Region with great attention. Many times he visited KRG Representation in Poland. He met Kurdish bishop Rabban from Duhok and saw photo-exhibition “suffering and hope” organized by KRG Poland devoted to refugees in Kurdistan Region.

An old Kurdish proverb says: “the only friends of the Kurds are mountains.” Kornel Morawiecki has proved that this is not entirely true. We will always remember him as true friend of Kurdish nation.
