KRG Representative in Poland opened the conference about the role of Kurds in the Middle East

On May 14 in Collegium Civitas University in Warsaw took place international conference “the Role of Kurds in the Middle East”, co-organized by Representation of Kurdistan Regional Government in Poland and under the patronage of KRG Representation.

This is the third edition of this event, its importance is growing year by year.  This time not only it has been attended by the best kurdologists and orientalists from all over Poland and Kurdistan, but also scientists from British and Dutch universities. There were also present delegation from foreign desk of Kurdistan Democratic Party headed by Hoshiyar Siwaily. One of the guest and speaker was also Azhy Ahmed- political advisor of KRG Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani

The conference started with the speech given by Ziyad Raoof KRG Representative in Poland who welcomed guests and thanked them for presence. He compared the current situation of the Kurds with last year. He noted that there were negative developments for Kurds, but at the same time the Kurdish issue after the referendum was further internationalized. Ziyad Raoof talked that it is impossible to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East without a political solution satisfying Kurdish aspirations. At the end of the speech Ziyad Raoof claimed that the role of Kurds in Iraq – and more broadly in the entire Middle East – can not be underestimated, the attempts to marginalize them brings negative effects for the entire region, destabilize the situation in Europe and around the world.

Next, the opening lecture entitled “state and society in the Kurdistan Region 1991-2018” was given by special guest- prof. Michiel Leezenberg from University of Amsterdam. Then within the frame of the conference there were four panel discussions: “the diverse aspects of Kurdish policy”, “identity, society and culture”, “security & defence”, “facing others, the various dimensions of international relations”. There was also the lecture about Yezidi.  In all, in the conference took part twelve speakers, the lectures were at a high level and each panel closed an interesting discussion.

On the occasion of the end of the conference in headquarters of Representation of Kurdistan Regional Government in Poland was held opening of the photo exhibition made by dr Przemysław Kosowski: Kurdistan (1940s) in the lens of traveler, diplomat and orientalist Witold Rajkowski (1910-1957?). Unique pictures attracted many guests and Kurdish culture enthusiasts.
