KRG delegation begins New York visit by meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister

New York, USA ( – On the margins of the United Nations General Assembly Sessions, KRG Foreign Minister, Falah Mustafa and KRG Representative in the United States, Bayan Rahman held separate meetings today with Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavuşoğlu and UK’s FCO Minister for Middle East and Department for International Development, Alistair Burt.

During the meetings, Kurdistan Region’s scheduled referendum for September 25th, political developments in Iraq, and regional and international reaction to the referendum were discussed. In both meetings, Minister Mustafa reiterated the position of the Kurdistan Region, stating that in the absence of a concrete alternative by the international community, the referendum cannot be postponed. He stressed that an independent Kurdistan would not pose any security threats to the neighboring countries and would be a factor for regional stability.

In the evening, the KRG delegation attended a reception hosted by Global Hope Coalition, under the patronage of UNESCO, in which Lieutenant Kochar Salih was awarded as a hero in the global campaign against extremism and intolerance. In her acceptance speech, Lieutenant Kochar highlighted the role of President Masoud Barzani and the anti ISIS coalition in the fight against ISIS. She dedicated her award to the soul of brave Peshmergas martyred in the campaign against ISIS.
