French minister of foreign affairs visited Kurdistan Region

On February 12 Jean Yves Le Drian, French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs visited Erbil where he met with the highest authorities of Kurdistan Region.

Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani expressed his thanks to President Macron, who was the first to receive a high-rank delegation from the Kurdistan Region after the tensions of last October and appealed to Baghdad for peaceful dialogue.

Participants of the meeting also discussed possibilities of strengthening Kurdish-French cooperation and talked about rebuilding territories liberated from ISIS. Minister Le Drian also promised to urge Baghdad to continue the path of “national reconciliation” and meet Kurdish aspirations.

Visit of minister Le Drian as well as the visit of German minister of defense Ursula von der Leyen means the end of “diplomatic embargo” when high rank foreign delegations were not allowed to visit Kurdistan Region
