Condolences on the passing away of Ali Ghafour

Kurdistan Regional Government Representation in Poland gives condolences to the family and friends of Ali Ghafour who passed away today after a long illness.

Ali Ghafour was a person of great contribution to Kurdish affairs in Poland. He was one of the first Kurds who came to study in Poland – in the early 1960s. From the very beginning, he was one of the main animators of the activities of Kurdish diaspora in Poland. With great courage, he co-organized and participated in demonstrations against the dictatorship and violation of Kurdish rights, he was also one of the pioneers in promoting Kurdish culture in Poland and introducing Poles to the history of our nation.

Ali Ghafour was co-founder of Kurdish- Polish Friendship Society and Kurdish Center for Information and Documentation. He was always supporting Kurdistan Regional Government Representation in Poland. He took part in an infinite number of scientific conferences and cultureal events devoted to Kurdish affairs, in Newroz celebrations in Poland and meetings of Kurdish diaspora.

For Kurds who started studying or working in Poland, he was like an older brother – always ready to help selflessly, offering advice and a good word. His passing away is an irreparable loss for Kurdistan, including the Kurdish diaspora in Poland.

Poland was his second homeland, which he also served with dedication and rendered many services. In 2003 he was awarded the Silver Cross of Merit from the President of Poland, he was also awarded for his public activity in Olsztyn.

We express our condolences and join in pain with Ali Ghafour’s family and relatives.
