A Statement from the Head of the DFR on Refugee Crisis

The war and violence in Syria and Iraq have had significant impacts in different ways and across borders. The Kurdistan Region, despite limited resources, has provided shelter and basic humanitarian needs for approximately 1.8 million refugees from Syria and internally displaced people (IDP) from Iraq.  The presence of Syrian refugees and Iraqi IDPs in our region has stretched education, health care, and other services to the limit. The crisis has not only influenced the region, but has further developed across continents. An overwhelming number of refugees are crossing borders under dire circumstances. (more…)

Prime Minister Barzani and former ICC Chief Prosecutor discuss efforts for genocide recognition of Yezidi case

Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq – Kurdistan Region Prime Minster, Nechirvan Barzani, yesterday received the former chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, ICC, Mr. Luis Moreno-Ocampo and his accompanying delegation.

The two sides discussed the situation of the victims of terrorist attacks, particularly the Yazidi Kurds who last year were subject to barbaric attacks by Islamic State terrorist organisation, ISIS. (more…)

Minister Falah Mustafa spoke with National Security Advisor to Prime Minister of Canada

Head of KRG Department of Foreign Relations Minister Falah Mustafa talked with Richard Fadden- National Security Advisor to Canadian Prime Minister- about  further development of mutual, very fruitful cooperation. On behalf of the people of Kurdistan minister Falah Mustafa thanked Canada for military support for Peshmerga and humanitarian support for refugees. Minister warmly encouraged Canadian authorities to open diplomatic representation of Canada in Erbil.


European Union opened liaison office Kurdistan Region

On Sunday 23rd August took place official opening of the European Union representation in Kurdistan. The event was attended by many representatives of Kurdistan Regional Government headed by prime minister Nechirvan Barzani and a few ministers. EU was represented by its ambassador in Iraq- Jana Hybaskova.


EU to open representation office in Kurdistan

Having finalized the necessary documentation with the Federal Foreign Ministry of Iraq and the KRG Department of Foreign Relations, the European Union will soon open an EU Delegation Liaison Office in Erbil to support the current activities of the EU in coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government, the United Nations and NGOs.


Minister Mustafa in Washington to update US officials and Congress

Minister Falah Mustafa Bakir, Head of the Department of Foreign Relations, is in Washington for a week-long visit to meet with senior United States government officials and Congress members, in order to urge the US to continue to support the Peshmerga against the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) and alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Kurdistan.
