Barzani Charity Foundation awarded Sergio de Mello prize

In those turbulent days for Kurdistan, happy message came from Poland. Today, during the ceremony in Krakow, Barzani Charity Foundation became laureate of the Polish Prize of Sérgio Vieira de Mello, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The Laureates received a diploma, a statuette of Sergio Vieira de Mello as well as financial prize founded by sponsors.

The Prize is awarded to individuals and organizations from all over the world promoting human rights, democracy and tolerance, it is awarded by the Panel of Judges composed of High Representatives of: the President of the Republic of Poland; UN High Commissioner for Refugees; Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Poland; Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to Poland; Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Institute of National Remembrance; Polish Commissioner for Civil Rights Protection, Embassies, Consulates and Foundations supporting actions of the Villa Decius Association in matters related to human rights; Founders of the Prize; Chairman and Director of the Villa Decius Association.

Proposal to award BCF was submitted in June by Ziyad Raoof KRG Representative in Poland.

During a gala laudatory speech in honor of Barzani Foundation was given by Henryk Wozniakowski, Head of “Znak” Institute. He presented accomplishments of laureates, particularly emphasizing its services to 1 800 000 refugees who took shelter in Kurdistan fleeing from ISIS terror, war in Syria and disorder in Iraq. Mr Wozniakowski also talked about BCF’s efforts to develop civil society in Kurdistan and peaceful coexistence between different faiths and ethnic groups.

After winning the prize Musa Ahmad head of BCF took the floor. He reminded about the most important tasks carried out by BCF in favor of refugees and peaceful coexistence of society of Kurdistan Region. He brought back legacy of Sergio de Mello, patron of the prize. Musa Ahmad also mentioned about current situation in Kurdistan and another wave of refugees- Kirkuk inhabitants. He appealed to international community to intensify actions to help people in need and support peaceful dialogue in region. Musa Ahmad also thanked everyone who voted for awarding Barzani Charity Foundation and gave a special thanks to KRG Representative in Poland. On Friday Ziyad Raoof is going to hold a dinner in honor of laureates.
